# Burns

Burns can be caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, or radiation. They are classified into first, second, and third-degree burns based on severity.

**What are Burns?**

## First Aid for Burns

1. Cool the Burn: Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for at least 20 minutes or until pain eases. Do not use ice, as this causes further tissue damage.
2. Cover with a Dressing: Apply a sterile, non-stick dressing or clean cloth. Do not use adhesive dressings on burns.
3. Avoid Creams or Ointments: Do not apply creams, butter, or ointments to burns as they can trap heat and cause infection.
4. Seek Medical Help: For larger burns, burns on sensitive areas (face, hands, feet, genitals), or third-degree burns, seek immediate medical attention.
